Abstract

This study aims to examine the representation of discrimination in Jordan Peele’s film Get Out through analyze of semiotics. Using Roland Barthes’ theory of three levels of signification—denotation, connotation, and mythology—the research analyzes how various signs within the film reflect deeper meanings related to discrimination. The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach, analyzing 20 data consisting of visual and verbal signs from the movie. These data are categorized by their denotative meaning (literal interpretation), connotative meaning (implied or associated meaning), and mythological meaning (the cultural ideologies or myths reinforced). The analysis is presented in tables to systematically display the denotation, connotation, and myth for each example, followed by an in- depth discussion. The findings highlight how Get Out uses semiotic signs to critique systemic discrimination and explore how visual media can convey complex social issues. there are several examples of scenes that were found to display discrimination such as the black man being kidnapped, the black people being powerless, the black man as an object of fetization, white men are prejudiced against black men, and the black man being exploited.
