Abstract
An idiomatic expression is a unique combination of words whose meaning cannot be directly inferred from the meanings of its individual components. Rather, these phrases derive meaning from social context, enriching communication with layers of depth, nuance, and often a hint of humor. This study investigates the role of idiomatic expressions in the animated film Toy Story 4 (2019). By applying Hockett’s theory of idiom and Lyons theory of contextual meaning, this research categorizes and examines idioms in the film through a descriptive qualitative analysis of its written dialogue. The findings revealed 30 idiomatic expressions, classified into five types: one proper name, two abbreviations, five English phrasal compounds, two slang terms, and a significant 20 figures of speech. Figures of speech emerged as the most frequent category, underscoring their importance in conveying humor and emotional resonance. This was followed by English phrasal compounds, abbreviations, slang, and proper names, each adding unique expressive qualities to the film’s dialogue and storytelling style. These results highlight the value of idioms in animated storytelling, demonstrating how they deepen character relationships, enrich humor and this research provides a nuanced understanding of idiomatic usage, offering insights for scholars, educators, and creators interested in the interplay of language, and media.
