Abstract

This study analyzes the compound words in the My Next Words English book for fourth-grade elementary students, published by the Ministry of Education and Culture, based on the Merdeka Curriculum. The research aims to identify the types, functions, and meanings of compound words in the My Next Words to support student’s vocabulary development, speaking, and writing skills. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study applies the theories of Delahunty and Garvey (2010) to classify compound word types (open, close, and hyphenated), Bauer (1993) to describe their functions (noun, verb, adjective, adverb), and Yule (2010) to analyze meanings, focusing on conceptual meaning. The result found 180 data of compound words. The findings reveal two types of compound words, 88 data of open compounds and 92 of close compounds, with no hyphenated compounds present. Regarding functions, there are 163 data of compound nouns, followed by 2 of compound verbs, 3 of compound adjectives, and 2 of compound adverbs. The study exclusively identifies conceptual meanings, as associative meanings are not found in this English book My Next Words.
