Abstract

This study aims to provide an explanation of the types and meanings of the use of onomatopoeic terms in the webtoon comic “Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint” by Shin Shong. This research uses a qualitative method that presents analysis in the form of pictures and writings. To conduct this research, the theory of Bredin (1996) regarding the type of onomatopoeia was used. In addition, this study uses Meyerhoff's (2006) theory to determine the meaning of the onomatopoeic words. There are 40 data found in this research, for the types of onomatopoeia 27 examples of direct onomatopoeia, 12 examples of associative onomatopoeia, and 1 example of exemplary onomatopoeia were found. Meanwhile, the meaning of onomatopoeia words in this digital comic has a lexical meaning related to the sound of the image and a contextual meaning influenced by the atmosphere or scene in the story. This study concludes that the use of onomatopoeia in the digital comic Webtoon “Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint” not only functions to support the visual aspect, but also affects the reader’s perception of events in the story.
