Abstract
This study is entitled “The Main Character’s Survival Instincts in Jeff Vandermeer’s Novel Annihilation”. This study aims to analyze the depiction of survival instincts by the main character’s struggle. The object of this study uses a novel entitled Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer. This study uses a Qualitative Approach that presents an analysis of the depiction of survival instincts that is available through writings in the novel. In answering the problem formulation in the issue of survival instincts, the writer uses the theory from Life Instinct Theory (1920) by Sigmund Freud’s perspective. The writer also finds several survival acts that happen to the main character. The survival acts in this novel were fight and flight. This study also concludes that the phenomenon of Survival Instinct in the book Annihilation is an science fiction story about a biologist striving to survive in an isolated area filled with various anomalies, unsolved mysteries, and unforeseen dangers.
