Abstract

This study of pragmatics deals with deixis in short story. The aims of this study are: to identify the types of deixis and to find out the referents of each deixis itself. The source of data is O’Henry’s short story entitle The Last Leaf was published in 1907. The writer uses qualitative approach to analyze the data because the data of the research are utterances of the dialogue from English short story that contain deixis in the pragmatics field. In this thesis, the writer combined the theory of deixis from Cruse and Levinson. Then, the results of this study are as follows: there are 12 data of person deixis, 6 data of spatial deixis, 11 data of temporal deixis, 4 data of discourse deixis, 5 data of social deixis, and 6 data of gesture deixis. Thus, the dominant type of deixis is person deixis. It used to point person in utterances of the dialogue of the story involved the speaker, the listener, the addressee, and the other participants who are mentioned in the dialogue.
