Abstract

This study aims to discuss the types of deixis and their reference used in “The Stars Shine Down” Sidney Sheldon’s Novel. The data were collected from that novel. Using qualitative method, the data of deixis were collected through by reading the novel, identifiying the types of deixis used, and finding out their reference. in analyzing the data, The theory from Yule was used. Based on the data finding and analysis, there were 40 a deixis found which were classified into three types, 19 items are the dominant, identified as person deixis, 14 items were temporal deixis, and 7 items were categorized as spatial deixis. Most references of the deixis explain proper nouns, nouns phrase, and pronouns which are a known as referring expression.
