Abstract

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study are as follows; first, to identify the types of translation shift used by translators in translating the novel "A Study in Scarlet" from English into Indonesian. Second, to analyze the types of translation shift identified and why the translation shift. The data used in this study is a novel entitled A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle (published early 1887) English version of which was published in 2008 by Guttemberg Foundation translated into Indonesian titled Penelusuran Benang Merah Search oleb B. Sendra Tanuwidjaja that published in 2001 by PT. Gramedia. This study uses a qualitative method by using the theory of J.C. Cattford (1965). The results of this research discovery Category Level Shift and Shift (Structure Shift, Rank/Unit Shift, Shift Class, and Intra-System Shift), but Rank/Unit Shift is the most dominating among them all. Thus the translation shift is very effective to use because it can produce the appropriate meaning of the original language into the target language.
