Abstract

In this study, the writer analyzed the under-age marriage as a social issue in the novel. The data were taken from the dialogues of “I am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced” novel. The purposes of this study are to depict the under-age marriage in the novel, to identify the factors that influence the under-age marriage, and to explain the impacts of under-age marriage depicted in the novel. Qualitative method was used in analyzing the dialogues and narrations were showed in this novel, and a sociological perspective was also used in analyzing the social issue. This study used theory from Lemon and ElHarake, Vogelstein, Tanwani, and another theory from Petersen. In this study, there are factors influenced the practice of under-age marriage and impacts experienced by the main character. The result of this study showed that there are some factors of under-age marriage such as economy, education, and tradition, while the impacts such as the loss of childhood, physical and emotional violence, health problem, and marriage conflict.
