Abstract

This study carries a dual objective: firstly, to perceive and categorize the specific manifestations of maxim flouting within the "Flagrant Podcast: Joe Rogan Gets High and Flagrant," and secondly, to explain the underlying factors propelling these instances of maxim flouting. Employing Cresswell’s (2018) qualitative research methodology with the limitation being the one episode of the aforementioned Flagrant podcast and building upon Grice's (1989) theoretical underpinnings, the study unearthed a total of 34 instances of maxim flouting. These instances were subsequently classified into 13 instances of maxim flouting of manner, 10 instances of maxim flouting of relation, 7 instances of maxim flouting of quality, and 4 instances of maxim violations of quantity. This corpus of 34 instances further shed light on the underlying factors for employing maxim flouting, unveiling that they predominantly encompass 15 instances of irony and humor, 7 instances of implicature, 6 instances of attention-grabbing, 5 instances of ambiguity, 4 instances of deception, and 1 instance of language play. Conclusively, the result of the study indicates that interlocutors mainly flouts maxim of manner and relation, with the combined occurrences of 23. This result then is observed further to notice that in majority of those occurrences, 10 of them are of irony and humor. With the podcast being a comedy podcast, consisting of stand-up comedian interlocutors, it could be understood why the result is as such. As such, the study confirm the podcasts purpose and goal, which is to entertain, with the analysis of its flouting of maxim. keywords: grice's theory, humor, maxim flouting, podcast
