Abstract

The study aims to analyze types of deixis, referents, and the functions of deixis in “Dear John” novel by Nicholas Sparks. The theories used in this study are taken from Yule (1996), Levinson (1983), and Riemer (2010). Using descriptive qualitative method the data are taken in various steps such as reading the novel, identifying deixis words, marking data, classifying types of deixis words and analyzing the functions of deixis words. There are 45 data of deixis, the dominant type of deixis found is person deixis 26 data, then time deixis showed 7 data and place deixis had 6, while discourse deixis 6 data and social deixis took in the last position had 2 data. The functions of the deixis are found mostly to point out to personal. Keyword: Pragmatics, Deixis, Types of Deixis, Referents, Functions of Deixis, Qualitative.
