Abstract

This study analyzes the oppression and the struggle against it portrayed in the novel Cinderella is Dead. The title of this study is “Women’s Struggle Against Oppression in Kalynn Bayron’s Cinderella is Dead (2020)”. The object of this study is taken from a novel entitled Cinderella is Dead (2020) written by Kalynn Bayron. The novel depicts a story about Sophia and the women who live in Mersailles who experience oppression. They must obey what has been arranged by the King about societal rules. While, Sophia, as the protagonist, challenges this oppressive system. Moreover, this study used the oppression theory from Young (1990) in the book “Justice and the Politics of Difference” and also used theory from Beauvoir (2010) “The Second Sex” to guide the writer in analyzing the oppression and the struggles experienced by women against the oppression. This study employs descriptive qualitative methods as the analysis presented in the text. The results of this study revealed that oppression toward women happened in four types such as exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, and violence. The women characters make two types of efforts to fight against the oppression: women intellectual and their freedom to actualize themselves.
