Abstract

This study aims to describe the characteristics of racism and the characters' responses to racism in the novel All American Boys (2015) by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely. The book, published in 2015, told the story of two teenagers, one black and one white, whose lives were permanently altered by an act of extreme police violence. The black teenager awoke in a hospital, while the white teenager witnessed the incident and the video recording of the cop beating the black teenager unconscious. The writer used a qualitative method approach where the data collected was presented in the form of descriptive analysis. The writer focused on the theory of John F. Dovidio et al. (2010) to develop this study. This analysis focused on how racism was depicted in the novel All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely. Based on the analysis, there were several types of racism depicted in the novel. The results of this study showed that there were three characteristics of racism, namely stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination. Apart from that, this research showed various responses and actions of characters facing racism, such as seeking justice, getting support, and protesting.
