Abstract

This study discusses the register used in the food and beverage department of Grand Zuri BSD City Hotel. It aims at finding types of word-formation processes that characterize the morphological features and contextual meanings of the register that appears both in employees’ natural conversations and worksheets. In order to answer the problems, this study uses the qualitative method by conducting an observation and interviews toward the object. By applying the theory of Finegan (2008), the writer finds that there are 30 registers which are actively used in the department. However, those special terms can only be classified as belonging to 6 out of 9 morphological features, including conversion, shortening, compounds, semantic shift, borrowed words, and derivation. Moreover, it is also found that the least common morphological feature is conversion, meanwhile the most is derivation. Furthermore, it is also known that the register contains a contextual meaning which is quite different from the literal meaning written in the Merriam-Webster dictionary.
