Abstract

This study identifies the types of flouted maxims and analyzes the strategies used to flout them in the Netflix series “Wednesday.” The series consists of eight episodes and is the object of this study. The writer employs a descriptive qualitative approach to present data in sentences and words. Grice’s Cooperative Principle theory (1975) is used to identify the types of maxim flouting, while Cutting’s theory (2002) is used to analyze maxim flouting strategies. The data is collected by watching and transcribing dialogues containing flouted maxims from the series. The types of maxims flouting and the strategies used to violate them are then identified and analyzed. The analysis indicates that all maxim flouting is found in the Netflix series “Wednesday.” The maxim of relation is the most dominant found in the Wednesday series, while the maxim of manner is rarely found. Changing the topic becomes the most frequently used strategy to divert the conversation. At the same time, irony and obscurity are strategies that are not found at all, and ambiguous statements are found in only one datum. This study finds 40 data points, with 8 flouting the maxim of quantity, 12 flouting the maxim of quality, 19 flouting the maxim of relation, and 1 flouting the maxim of manner. The research results show that maxim violations and strategies can be found in the character dialogue in the Netflix series “Wednesday.”
