Abstract

The title of this thesis is Identity Ambiguity in Zadie Smith’s White Teeth Novel (2000) discussed the identity ambiguity of characters in White Teeth novel. This novel explores the intertwining lives of two families in London, the Joneses and the Iqbals spanning multiple generations. Samad Iqbal is living in contrast to his original culture making him and his family experience the fading of their identity as Muslims and makes Samad experience an identity ambiguity. Identity ambiguity refers to the state or condition in which an individual experiences uncertainty, complexity, or contradiction regarding their sense of self, particularly concerning social categories such as race, ethnicity, and religion. This study aims to reveal the identity ambiguity of the diaspora depicted and to analyze the protagonist’s efforts to overcome the identity ambiguity. This study uses a qualitative approach as it is presented in the form of textual interpretation using a narrative-type research design because the discussion mainly explores the life experiences of a characters in the novel. To answer the problems in the study, the writer applies Stuart Hall's Cultural Identity and Diaspora (1990). The results of this study show that identity ambiguity showed through the protagonists’ lifestyle such as traditions, attires, and languages which vary greatly with their origin culture. Additionally, this study also shows the protagonist’s efforts to overcome identity ambiguity, such as exploration of their origins, and adapting to the host culture.
