Abstract
The aims of this study are to analyze the setting as a part of intrinsic elements of how it creates the mood and atmosphere portrayed in the story and how it affects the main character represented in the novel entitled To Kill a Mockingbird (1960) by Harper Lee. This study applies the qualitative research method as the analysis is presented in the form of text. In order to guide this study, the writer uses the perspective of (Guth & Rico, 1993) in analysis with a focus on the setting. The analysis results prove that the setting plays an important part in creating a story. Through the narration of the setting, the reader not only can identify the place and time of the story but also could feel the reflection of the atmosphere and the mood of the story. The setting also shapes the character. Through the analysis setting as a challenge, it portrayed that the main character, Jean Louise Finch is scared of the house called Radley Place with its mystery. Through the analysis setting as mold, it reflects Jean’s character who is curious, straightforward, and confident. Keywords: character, intrinsic, narrative elements, setting
