Abstract
The study is used to analyze the politeness strategies by Ellen Degeneres in “The Ellen Show”. The aim of this study focused on the type and the factors that influence the used of politeness strategies in relation to Brown and Levinson politeness strategies. This study used a qualitative approach, the data were analyzed by referring to Brown and Levinson politeness strategy based in conversation between Ellen and her guest star. From the results of data analysis, it was obtained (1) There were found 31 data of politeness strategies, consisted of 16 data of positive politeness, 6 data of off record, 5 data of negative politeness and 4 data of bald on record. Thus, positive politeness is the most frequently used type of politeness strategy the Q interview between Ellen and her guest star. (2) The factors that influence the used of politeness strategies in “The Ellen Show” such as: Payoffs, Social distance, Relative power and Rank of imposition. Social distance is most commonly found in conversations between Ellen and her guests, because they have many similarities and differences in how they view things.
