Abstract

Illocutionary acts are often used in everyday life as a form of one-way and two-way communication between people especially speech in public spaces. This study aims to identify the types and examine the functions of illocutionary acts in speech. The objective of this study is the video of BTS Commencement Speech in Dear Class of 2020. The selected utterances made by the members in the speeches that contain implicit illocutionary acts are the subject of this study. This study uses the theory by Searle & Vanderveken (1985) to determine the types and functions of illocutionary acts found in BTS Commencement Speech in Dear Class of 2020. Descriptive qualitative was used as the method in achieving its goals appropriately presented by describing them in the form of an essay. The result of this research shows that there are 47 data of their utterances that contain all types of illocutionary acts, as follows: assertives, directives, expressives, commissives, and declaratives. The writer concludes that the illocutionary act types of assertives and expressives are the most common in BTS Commencement Speech in Dear Class of 2020.
