Abstract

This study aimed to analyze types and reasons for code-switching and code-mixing. The object of this study is the WhatsApp Group Chat of Sasing 2015, and the data were taken from 4th February 2020 until 1st May 2021. The approach used in this study is the qualitative approach. To guide this study, the writer used two theories. The writer used the first theory from Holmes (2013) to analyze the types of code- switching and the reasons for code-switching and code-mixing. The second theory from Muysken (2000) analyzes types of code-mixing. The result of the study showed that three types of code-switching were found. Out of 14 utterances containing code-switching, 3 data were identified as affection function, 4 data were identified as metaphorical switching, and 7 data were identified as lexical borrowing. Then, three types of code-mixing were also found in 13 utterances, in which 7 data were identified as insertion, 5 data were identified as alternation, and 1 data were identified as congruent lexicalization. Finally, the reasons for using code-switching and code-mixing were 20 data due to talking about a particular topic and 7 data showing solidarity. It can be concluded that talking about a particular topic is the most reason used by participants. Key words: code-mixing, code-switching, Sociolinguistics, WhatsApp.
