Abstract

The objectives of this study entitled “Grammatical Error in Simple Past tense recount Text in Student’s Writing: Student at Ninth Grade SMPN 03 Muncang Lebak Banten” it can be summarized as follows: firstly, to discover the common types of errors in simple past tense found in recount text written by the ninth grade students of SMPN 03 Muncang Lebak Banten, secondly, to discover the causes of students’ errors in writing simple past tense recount text. This study uses qualitative research, this qualitative research uses the theory of Crowl (1996:16). This research delved into the experiences of 15 ninth-grade students from SMPN 03 Muncang Lebak Banten. This research instrument is writing English exercises, which focus on creating recount text sentences using simple past tense. conducted interviews with five students, and assessed the students' writing. Data collection requires analysis of the results of exercises, interviews and assessments to determine student abilities. This research uses Dulay's (1982) theory and utilizes a taxonomy of surface strategies to categorize types of errors. Data analysis found a total of 76 errors consisting of omission errors, addition errors, arrangement errors, and arrangement errors made by students. Uncovering the results, it became clear that misformation errors were the most common errors among students, while addition errors proved to be the least common type of error. This research serves as an important step to find out the intricacies of error patterns in the use of simple past tense by students, finding common errors and their causal factors.
