Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine children bullying and the main character overcoming bullying. The object of this study is the children's novel by Erin Entrada Kelly entitled Hello, Universe 2017. The objectives of this research study are twofold. Firstly, the study aims to explore and analyze the representation of bullying, specifically verbal and physical bullying, in the novel “Hello, Universe” by Erin Entrada Kelly. Secondly, the research aims to investigate the process through which the main character in the novel overcomes bullying. This study applies a qualitative descriptive method to gather and present the data analysis by reading the novel. Meanwhile, to guide this study, the writer categorizes the data based on the types of bullying defined by Rigby (2002). As a result, it can be concluded that the main character that reflects bullying itself is Virgil. Through this study, the writer found out that after the bullying experienced, Virgil learned that he can be true to his introverted self while he gained a new perspective on to overcome bullying.
