Abstract

The objectives of this qualitative study were to discover the types of maxim violation and figure out the reasons for maxim violation occurred in the first season of a webtoon entitled Dr. Frost by JongBeom Lee. Grice’s Cooperative Principle theory (1975) was used to identify and classify the types of maxim violations. Then, Christoffersen’s theory (2005) was applied to determine the possible reasons for the maxim violations. The result of this study revealed that there were 26 maxim violations found in the first season of Dr. Frost webtoon, consisting of 20 utterances violating the quality maxim, 3 utterances violating the relation maxim, 2 utterances violating the quantity maxim, and 1 utterance violating the manner maxim. Most of the utterances were violated by the characters to avoid a situation that was painful to deal with. Keywords: Cooperative principle, maxim, maxim violation, pragmatics, qualitative
