Abstract
The study aims to find out many types of impoliteness strategies used by speakers and the listener responses towards impoliteness in the movie Free Guy. The data source of this study was taken from the characters' utterances in the movie entitled Free Guy, which was released on October 31, 2021. The methodology used in this study is a qualitative study. The writer uses Culpeper's (2005) impoliteness strategy as the theoretical framework for this study. The study finds that impoliteness is frequently used as a strategy in conversations between characters. The analysis results show 27 utterance data containing impoliteness strategies. Out of the 27 data, 6 include bald on-record impoliteness, 11 positive impoliteness, 8 negative impoliteness, and 2 off-record impoliteness or sarcasm/mock politeness. Positive impoliteness is the most widely used strategy. It indicates that the characters in the movie tend to use strategies that combine impolite elements with efforts to maintain a positive image or avoid conflicts that are too serious. This study also does not find one of the impoliteness strategies, withhold impoliteness, because the characters in this movie have a more open and expressive personality. Therefore, withholding their politeness becomes less relevant or incompatible with their identity and purpose. Based on the 27 data on impoliteness strategies, there are various responses to the movie. All impoliteness responses were found, namely, 4 accepting the FTA (face-threatening act), 8 countering the FTA, and 15 not performing the FTA. The study shows that the characters in the movie are trying to maintain a positive atmosphere and avoid unnecessary conflict. Keyword: impoliteness, movie, responses, strategy, utterance
