Abstract

The aims of this study, entitled “Forms of Racism Against Black Americans in Jericho Brown’s Five Selected Poems from an anthology book entitled The Tradition (2019), are to analyze three forms of racism in selected poems and to analyze Black Americans resistant to racism. The objects of this study are five poems entitled Bullet Points, The Tradition, Good White People, The Water Lilies, and Riddle in The Tradition poetry book written by Jericho Brown and published by Copper Canyon Press (2019). The racial discrimination issue is analyzed using postcolonial literary criticism by applying the quotations of the theory of racism from two experts, Richard Delgado and Jean Stefancic, in their theory book Critical Race Theory: The Cutting Edge second edition (1999). This study applied a descriptive qualitative research method presented in academic essay form. Therefore, the writer focused on analyzing racial discrimination acts experienced by black Americans. The analysis of this study indicates that two paramount parts can be concluded. The First, black Americans experienced racial discrimination in different forms, such as racial discrimination, racial stigma, racial struggle, and slavery. Second, it also reveals the resistance of black Americans against racism through inspirational messages in selected poems. Keywords: racism, Jericho Brown, black American, poems
