Abstract

The tittle of this study was “Representation of Beauty Myth in Jason Matthew’s Red Sparrow Novel”. This study used Red Sparrow novel as the object of the study which tells about Dominika, a former ballerina who cannot afford her mother hospitality due to her accident that did not allow her to do ballet anymore. Then her uncle come and suggest her to work as a double agent for Russia and America in a condition where she should use her beauty and sexiness to seduce the enemies. This story told about how Dominika the main character should deal with the beauty myth that did not allow women to do what they want to do without men’s permission. This study focused on how the beauty myth was represented and how the main protagonist deal with the beauty myth in the novel using theory from Naomi Wolf (1999) The Beauty Myth in Culture and Sex chapters. The writer used qualitative descriptive method to collect, to analysis, and to interpret the data from the dialogues or monologues. The result showed that beauty myth only focused on women’s physical appearance. The beauty myth inside the novel represented into two those are in Culture and Sex. In Culture, women should be obedient if they want to be called beautiful. In Sex, women had to be sensual to be called beautiful. However, the beauty standard did not give an effect to her. In Culture, she showed that she did not want to be obedient to men. In Sex, she let herself enjoy the pleasure she wanted and did not think her body just a tool to seduce men.
