Abstract
This study is entitled “Low Self-Esteem in the Main Character of Top Gun: Maverick (2022)” This study aims to analyze the depiction of the main character’s low self-esteem and how the main character dealing it with the low self-esteem. The object of the study is taken from a film entitled Top Gun: Maverick (2022), written by Ehren Kruger, Eric warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie, based on story Peter Craig and Justin Marks and directed by Joseph Kosinski. The film tells the story of a top of Navy pilot training a graduating Top Gun class for a Special mission. They are later involved in a mission with specific objectives. This study uses the qualitative method to present the findings in both essay and picture form by examining the narrative and cinematography elements. Moreover, the grand literary criticism approach of psychoanalysis is used to address the issues presented in the film especially low self-esteem issue, using Abraham Maslow’s (1943) Theory of Human Motivation. The study's findings reveal that low self-esteem is depicted through decisions and actions, and this low self-esteem can be addressed through self-improvement efforts and contributing to others.
