Abstract

This study is entitled "A Stigma Towards Infectious Disease Patients in the Dallas Buyer's Club (2013)". This study aims to analyze the issue of stigma depicted in film Dallas Buyer Club and how the main character dismisses the stigma. The object of the study is taken from Dallas Buyer's Club (2013), written by Craig Borton and Melisa Wallack and directed by Jean-Marc Vallee. The film tells the story of the main character who was diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, which resulted in a negative stigma from society. The main character is clearly ostracized by people who have been close to him in life, fired from his job, and eventually lost his place of residence. Ron struggles and survives on illegal drugs in the hope that his disease can be cured. This study uses the qualitative method to present the findings in both essay and picture form by examining the narrative and cinematography elements. Moreover, the stigma theory in this study uses the theory Erving Goffman (1963). The results of the study show that the main characters struggling againts of labeling, stereotypes, separation, and discrimination of the enviroment. At the same time, the main character also seems to be fighting against these forms of stigma. Keywords: Stigma, Erving Goffman, discrimination, labelling, stereotypes, separation.
