Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types and functions of impoliteness strategies that are used by the characters in video games. The object of this thesis is a video that is contained in one of the storylines of Grand Theft Auto V entitled Grand Theft Auto V - Franklin Cutscenes (2013) by Celebrity Games. This study applies qualitative study as the method to analyze the utterance. The writer employs the theory of Jonathan Culpeper (1996) as a guiding framework in impoliteness strategies. The study finds that impoliteness is frequently used as a strategy in conversations between the characters. Bald on record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, withhold impoliteness, and sarcasm or mock impoliteness all appear with bald on record impoliteness mostly used in it. In addition, this study finds functions of impoliteness. There are affective function, coercive function, and entertaining function. Moreover, the most common function in this study is affective function. The result of this study indirectly shows that criminal background tends to express impolite directly to the interlocutors, combined with a loud voice to appear superior.
