Abstract

The title of this thesis is Representation of Homosexuals in Michael Cunningham's “By Nightfall”. This thesis focuses on analyzing the character's homosexual experience and how the character struggles to survive with his choices in By Nightfall by Michael Cunningham. By using the theory of psychosexual proposed by Freud (1905) to analyze psychosexual and homosexual expressions as well as to reveal the struggles of the characters in Michael Cunningham's novel By Nightfall. This thesis uses descriptive-qualitative method and literature research from novels and several articles, books, and journals related to this thesis. The results of this study indicate that sexual desire in the novel By Nightfall by Michael Cunningham is described by expressions and experiences through the romantic relationships of the characters in his life related to homosexual desires. Furthermore, the character's struggle reveals the activities carried out to fulfill his sexual desires to the point of recognition to everyone.
