Abstract

The study entitled “Islamophobia portrayed in Syed M. Masood’s The Bad Muslim Discount” discussed the Islamophobia issue in the novel. The goals of this study are to uncover the portrayal of Islamophobia experienced by the main characters and to analyze the injustice treatment towards the Muslim in western that led to the act of Islamophobia experienced by the main characters in the novel entitled The Bad Muslim Discount (2021) written by Syed M. Masood in the perspective of Orientalism. The method has been used to analyze the study is the qualitative method. To analyze this novel, the theory of Edward Said’s Orientalism (1978) is used to support the concept of the related explanations of the issue. The result of this study revealed that there were two forms of Islamophobia in the Western world that Muslims experienced. Those are stereotypes and superiority. This study also depicted the Muslim struggle through the representation of the main characters against Islamophobia by showing kindness of Islam, avoidance and adapting to live as Muslims in the West.
