Abstract

This study entitled “Linda Sue Park’s Prairie Lotus Novel (2020): Depiction of Racial Stigma” aims to describe the racial stigma faced by the main character in the novel Prairie Lotus written by Linda Sue Park. This novel portrays the life of the main character who lived in American surroundings and experienced racial stigma because she is a biracial kid, half-American and half-Asian. This study uses qualitative research to analyze and disclose stigma actions done by her surroundings. the writer applies the perspective of Erving Goffman (1963), entitled Stigma: notes on the management of spoiled identity. The result of this study found that the main character experiences racial stigma actions such as disqualifying actions, cold stares, and mocking actions by society. Furthermore, she took steps such as developing self-quality, avoiding contact with others, and feeling inferior to respond to the racial stigma of people around her.
