Abstract
This study aims to examine the usage of women’s language features and the function of women’s language features in Kamala Harris’ utterances in the ‘Face the Nation’ YouTube channel dialogue with Margaret Brennan. The descriptive qualitative analysis approach was applied to this investigation. The data from Kamala Harris’s utterances include Lakoff’s (1975) hypothesis of women’s language features. The acquired data evaluate using Jakobson’s language function theory. The study indicated six out of 10 elements of women’s language were utilized in Kamala utterances. The data consist of 20 (18%) emphatic stress, 12 (11%) rising intonations, 31 (27%) intensifiers, 7 (6%) hypercorrect grammar, 1 (1%) super polite forms, and the most dominant features are lexical hedges with 42 (37%) total data. There are no empty adjectives, tag questions, avoidance of strong swear words, and precise color terms found in this research. Thus, from the most dominant features it was concluded that Kamala’s utterances reflected her uncertain feelings toward her statement to find out appropriate words in Kamala utterances. However, five out of six elements of language function were found in Kamala’s women’s language data. The result showed 2 (3%) poetic function, 21 (30%) emotive function, 9 (13%) conative function, 2 (3%) phatic function, 37 (52%) referential function, and multilingual function has zero existence. The most frequent function is a referential function. It indicates Kamala wanted to ensure the audience through her utterances and to provide evidences of her work.
