Abstract
This study deals with the American dream which focuses on how the immigrants struggle for their dream. This study aims to depict all of the characters’ struggles in the context of reaching their American Dream portrayed by the characters and how they achieve their American dream in Nicola Yoon’s The Sun Is Also A Star (2016). This study uses the qualitative research method with the help of Jennifer L. Hochschild’s Facing Up to the American Dream: Race, Class and the Soul of the Nation (1995) to provide a better understanding by taking note of the characters’ struggles in their search for the American dream based on the data and theory cited. The study has found that the characters have faced several struggles in their search for the American dream which is based on the theory of Absolute, Relative, and Competitive success. It is also found that the characters in the novel are able to achieve their American dream at the end of the novel. Keywords: American Dream, Immigrant, Struggle.
