Abstract

This study focused on women's language features used by Miss Universe 2018, Catriona Gray, in the Build Series Talk Show program. This study was entitled “Women’s Language Features used by Miss Universe 2018 in the Build Series Talk Show”. The main objectives of this study were to identify the kinds of features of women’s language, and the functions of these features used Robbin Lakoff Theory (1975). This study was conducted with a qualitative descriptive method, while the data were taken from the utterance of Miss Universe 2018, Catriona Gray in the talk show. This study discovered that there were 36 lexical hedges, 2 question tags, 23 rising intonations on declarative, 30 empty adjectives, 22 intensifiers, 6 hypercorrect grammars, 9 super polite forms, 4 words of emphatic stress, 1 precise color terms, and 4 avoidances of strong swear words. There were also 6 functions found used by Catriona, such as 16 functions to express feelings or opinions, 18 functions to get response, 3 functions to express uncertainty, 37 functions to emphasize utterance, 6 functions to start discussion, and 11 functions to soften utterance. There have been found all the features and functions that Robbin Lakoff (1975) stated. The most frequently used features were Lexical Hedges or Fillers, and the most frequently used function was to express feelings. Keywords: Women’s language, features, Miss Universe, Talk Show.
