Abstract
The purposes of this study are to examine the types of flouting maxim and the functions that occur in the utterances of the characters in the Arcane Season 1 Netflix series. This study uses the theory of Grice’s (1975) cooperative principle to identify and to analyze the types of the flouting maxim and the theory of Leech’s (1983) illocutionary to identify the functions, this study uses the descriptive qualitative method. From all the data collected, the result shows that there are 43 utterances that the characters in Arcane Season 1 have flouted – 8 flouting maxims of quantity, 4 flouting maxim of quality, 1 flouting maxim of manner, and 30 flouting maxims of relevance. Moreover, for the function of the flouting maxim, there are 10 convivial, 2 conflictive, 10 competitive, and 21 collaborative. The most dominant type of flouting maxim is relevance and the most dominant function of the flouting maxim is collaborative. Keywords: Flouting maxim, Maxim, Netflix, Pragmatics.
