Abstract

The study entitled Poverty: Social Class Struggle in Selected Short Stories aims to analyze the issue of poverty that will be examined by using social class theory, and the issue of poverty exists in lower class condition, where the upper class is the opposite. The objects of this study are The Skylight Room by O Henry (1906), Marigolds by Eugenia W. Collier (1969), and The Scholarship Jacket by Martha Salinas (1986). Those three short stories have similar poor life conflict, and also present the class struggle. Thus, as the guidance, the writer uses social class struggle theory in Karl Marx’s perspective (1955). This study uses a qualitative research method. This study focuses on social class struggle in the selected short stories. There are several events that show the situation of social class struggle that occurred in selected short stories. In The Skylight Room short story, social class struggle is represented in Miss Leeson’s hard life, and in Mrs. Parker’s life with full of expensive properties. In Marigolds short story, social class struggle is represented in the black folks’ hard life, and in the white folks’ life with full of power. In The Scholarship Jacket, social class struggle is represented in Martha’s challenging life, and in the Board’s life with full of authority.
