Abstract

The title of this study is "Gender-Based Discrimination in Netflix Limited Series Self Made" which aims to identify how discrimination to black women portrayed in the series, and it also demonstrated how the main character was against all the discrimination that happened during the series. This series tells about a black woman named Sarah who wanted to break down the society's view of black women in Missouri by making a business. In the process of making the business, she got a lot of discrimination because black women considered the lowest class and it was not appropriate for them to be involved in the business. However, in the end, Sarah proved that black women can be successful, if they get the same chance just like the others, and Sarah becomes the first African American self-made millionaire woman. By using the qualitative method and applying Fakih's gender theory (1996) as the leading theory to analyze gender-based discrimination. This study elaborated the discrimination experienced by the main character and how she was against it. The results show that all types of gender-based discrimination based on Fakih's theory, marginalization, subordinate, stereotype, violence, and double burden were found in this study. How Sarah was against discrimination was by verbal confrontation, self-defense, cut off people, and womanism. Keywords: black feminism, gender-based discrimination, gender discrimination types.
