Abstract

This study deals with Illocutionary Act found in Thuy Le’s Utterances at Bloomberg Live Channel episode Automotive ASEAN | ASEAN Business Summit. The objectives of this study were to find out the types of illocutionary acts and reveals the functions of each type of Illocutionary Acts in Thuy Le’s utterances at Bloomberg Live Channel episode Automotive ASEAN | ASEAN Business Summit. The method used in this study is the descriptive qualitative analysis and using Austin’s (1962) and Searle’s (1979) speech act theories. The illocutionary acts performed by Thuy Le as the Interviewee were classified and analysed using Austin’s and Searle’s theories. The result showed that thirty six (36) utterances of illocutionary speech acts performed by Thuy Le. Assertive is the most dominant uttered, followed by expressive, commisive, and directive. However, no declaratives found in Thuy Le’s utterances. The reason why declaratives were not found because her utterances did not contain elements of a declaration to formalize a new state, status or so on. Further, of all speech acts performed, Thuy Le delivered ten purposes of her utterances, namely assuring, claiming, describing, stating, telling, promising, requesting, praising, thanking, and welcoming.
