Abstract

This study deals with identity crisis issue which focuses on the main character of the novel named Nina. It is conducted in the analysis of the narrative elements of Shappi Khorshandi’s Nina Is Not Okay novel. This study aims to analyse how the identity crisis depicted and how the main character deal with the identity crisis during adolescence period in Shappi Khorshandi’s Nina Is Not Okay novel. This study used qualitative research method with the help of James E. Marcia’s identity statuses theory (1966) to provide better understanding based on the dialogues and narrations that indicate the identity crisis. The result of this study shows that Nina suffers a complex step of her life that signify Nina’s identity crisis such as; uncertainty of commitment, willing to commit, exploring various commitment, and committed to identity. Nina’s personality characteristics used as her defence to fight against her guilt to her surroundings who have been take care of her when she is being alcoholic as she commits to stay away from alcohol which including autonomy, moral reasoning, and locus of control.
