Abstract

This study analyzes the racial discrimination experienced by black characters. The object of this study are two picture books entitled “Racial Discrimination Portrayed in Picture Books The Soccer Fence and Something Happened in Our Town”. This study aims to reveal racial discrimination that occurs in picture books. The theory from Blank et al. (2004) is applied as a guide to reveal racial discrimination and Feagin's theory (2011) is used as a guide to handle with racial discrimination. In addition, Creswell's (2007) qualitative approach was applied in analyzing the main issues and the data was obtained from quotations and pictures. The results of this study indicate that the characters receives several acts of discrimination, which include verbal discrimination, avoidance, and exclusion in the form of segregation. There are also three types of how the characters handles racial discrimination against the differences depicted, namely withdrawal, acceptance, and verbal confrontation. It can be concluded that this study illustrates how unfair treatment of black people by white people. Keywords : inequality, minorities, picture book, racial discrimination, racism
