Abstract

This study is entitled “Jennifer Egan Look at Me: The Woman’s Obsession in Beauty Images”. This study aims to analyze the issue of women obsession with beauty standards and social rejection of the beauty myth. This study object is the novel Look at Me (2002) by Jennifer Egan. This novel tells the story of a female model whose face is damaged and her obsession with becoming beautiful again. This study uses qualitative methods to present analysis in essay form. This study uses feminist literary criticism to help the issues presented. This study uses the theory and perspective of Naomi Wolf (1990) in her book The Beauty Myth: How Images of Beauty are used against Women. This theory is about beauty myths that develop in society and how women have to comply with these rules. The results of the study shows that women are so obsessed with this rule that they do various ways to achieve it. They do plastic surgery, skincare treatments, breast implants, shop for branded things, etc. However, after doing all, there was a feeling of dissatisfaction within the woman. They do it so as not to feel different from other women. They do not experience discrimination because of beauty myths. Keyword: beauty stereotypes, feminism, naomi wolf, the beauty myth
