Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of illocutionary acts found in the contestants and the judges on America's Got Talent 2021 and to analyze how each function of illocutionary act was used in the contestants and the judges on America's Got Talent 2021. The writer used descriptive qualitative analysis. This study used Searle's (1976) theory about illocutionary acts to analyze the data. The data sources for this study consisted of audition videos of contestants from the 16th seasons of American's Got Talent 2021, which were compiled into a single playlist on the official American's Got Talent YouTube channel. This playlist encompassed a total of 16 videos featuring diverse contestants, including Mike Goodwin, Lewberger, Pasha and Aliona, Memdath Mamdouh, Bini the Bunny, Rialcris, Kevin Micoud, Ehrlich, Michael Winslow, Cam, Madilyn Bailey, Jimmie Herod, Shoji, Pam, Klek Entos, T3, and Nightbride. The judges for these auditions consisted of Simon, Sofia, Howie, and Heidi. The analysis showed that the contestants demonstrated various illocutionary acts: representative, directive, commissive, and expressive. Among the contestants, representative illocutionary acts were the most frequently used, with Contestant 6 and Contestant 16 showing the highest number of representative acts. Contestant 12 and Contestant 6 had the highest overall number of illocutionary acts. In addition, expressive illocutionary acts were the most common among the judges, with Howie using the highest number of expressive acts. It aligns with the emotional and impactful nature of performances on America's Got Talent, as judges often need to convey their reactions and emotions in their assessments. In America's Got Talent 2021, the contestants and judges utilized different illocutionary acts to communicate and express themselves. The contestants and judges in America's Got Talent 2021 employed various illocutionary acts to communicate their thoughts, provide feedback, express emotions, and convey information as its function.
