Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the problem of trauma experienced by the main character when she was a child due to sexual abuse. This research is entitled "Childhood trauma in Spilled Milk: Mapping Psychological Struggle in Hierarchy of Needs". The object of this research is the novel "Spilled Milk" by KL. Randis (2013). This novel tells the story of a girl who was abused twice by her biological father as a child which caused her to experience psychological impacts in adulthood. However, the main character is able to overcome all her problems until she can win to get justice. This study uses qualitative methods and data sources obtained from the narrative and dialogue in the novel "Spilled Milk". The writer uses the Hierarchy of Needs theory from Abraham Maslow (1954) which is applied in this research. The results of this study indicate that the characters in this novel have a form of response to psychological impacts that cause fear, guilt, shame, anger, nightmares, and also flashbacks. In addition, the main character can struggle to overcome her childhood trauma by going to a psychologist to heal her trauma and seeking support from the people around her so she can fight her own father in court.
