Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze racial discrimination depicted in the literary context of the novel. The object of this study is a novel entitled Out of Darkness by Ashley Hope Pèrez. This study uses qualitative research methods as an analysis presented in the form of narrative text. To guide this study, the writer uses the perspective of Fred L. Pincus (1996) regarding three forms of discrimination: Individual, institutional, and structural discrimination. The results of this analysis show that individual, institutional, and structural discrimination are interconnected and collectively influence the dynamics of the narrative. Individual discrimination is illustrated through unfair treatment of individuals based on race, institutional discrimination reflected in policies or norms that benefit one group and harm other groups, and structural discrimination describes systemic inequality involving elements of social, economic, and political. This study also provides in-depth insights into the complexities of racial discrimination in a literary context, and relates it to relevant social realities.
