Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze transgender identity and its cause of the main character in Luna novel by Julie Anne Peters. The object of the study is novel. It described how someone struggled with sexual identity. This study applies qualitative research methods in order to reveal the issue of the novel. To guide this study, the writer uses James Marcia's identity theory to analyze the transgender identity of the main character Liam from Luna novel by Julia Anne Peters and the cause of his transgender identity. In this study, the writer focuses on the portrayal of transgender as a form of sexual identity disorder and its cause. The study results show that the main character goes through 4 phases of identity development, which are identity diffusion, identity foreclosure, identity moratorium, and identity achievement. The cause of Luna's transgender identity is shown in forms of crisis and his commitment to face certain crisis such as gender dysphoria, transphobia, and rejection in his journey to find his identity.
