Abstract

This study analyzes the semiotic in selected memes on @memes Instagram account. Then, the study aims to identify and explain the Signifier and Signified of the selected memes and the meanings. Moreover, this study applies a qualitative descriptive method because the data collected in the form of words and pictures. The data source of the study were taken by screenshot from @memes Instagram account. In order to support the study, the writer uses the semiotic theory from Saussure (1959), namely Signifier and Signified to analyze the selected memes and the meanings. The results of the study showed that the writer found the Signifier and Signified of 20 selected memes are divided into 8 categories, namely Love with a total of 2 memes, Psychological with a total of 6 memes, Economy with a total of 2 memes, Family with a total of 3 memes, Education with a total of 3 memes, Health with a total of 2 memes, Natural Environment with a total of 1 meme, and Population with a total of 1 meme. Hence, the Psychological category becomes the most dominant with 6 memes. Moreover, the selected memes in each the same category explains the different meanings.
