Abstract

This study examines the types and factors that influenced the language style used by the millennial generation. The writer uses the theory of language style proposed by Joos (1976, as cited in Coupland, 2007) to find the five language styles used by the millennial generations and the social factor theory by Holmes (2013) as a supported theory to find the four factors that influenced language styles used by the millennial generations. The writer uses a qualitative research method in which the data was taken through observing the conversation of the millennial generations in the Indonesian Young Scientist Association. The result of the study shows that there are 30 data of language styles used by the millennial generation with the most dominant type is the consultative style, and the type of language style that is rarely used is the frozen style. The consultative style is the dominant language style that appears in the conversation of the millennial generation because the speaker mostly talks to friends or colleagues and in semi- formal situations that do not need well-structured utterances. However, in this study, the writer did not find the intimate style used by the millennial generation because they mostly use formal and casual language. Moreover, these types of language styles were influences by the four factors, such as participants, setting, topic, and function. The factor that highly influences the millennial generation is the setting because the conversation mostly happens in semi-formal situations in which the purpose of the conversation is to discuss or give suggestions, and some conversations take place on very formal occasions such as in the opening ceremony which is a respectable occasion where focus and seriousness are required. However, the topic has become the least factor influencing the millennial generation, because the topic of conversation is different and tends to be spontaneous.
