Abstract

The aims of this study were to identify language style used by Retno Marsudi and to determine the factors influenced the language style of Retno Marsudi’s speech at United Nations General Assembly. The object of this study was a Retno Marsudi’s speech video entitled “Pernyataan Lengkap Menlu RI Retno Marsudi di Majelis Umum PBB Terkait Palestina” from YouTube. The method applied on this study was a qualitative descriptive approach. This study used two theories from two experts, Martin Joos (2007) – related to language style and Holmes (1992) – related to factors influencing language style. The writer found that formal language style data were predominantly found in this study. This type was frequently used by Retno Marsudi as she portrayed her professional image as Indonesia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. She also used advanced English as an official language of the United Nations. The topic was concerned on peace according to conflict between Palestine-Israel. It might be said that Retno Marsudi’s whole state speech represented a function of declaration.
