Abstract
Speech on gender equality aims to raise awareness of gender equality issues especially for women, and there are a lot of movements created by women to support each other. This movement will lead to more recognition of women in various expertise. The purpose of this study is to analyzes the types and functions of illocutionary acts in Angelique Kidjo’s speech at International Women’s Day 2020, with the theme of gender equality. In writing this study, the writer used the qualitative method and illocutionary acts theory of Searle (1979). In the result of this study, the writer found 4 out of the 5 types of illocutionary types by Searle. The findings show 28 utterances, assertive 20 utterances, directive 5 utterances, commissive 1 utterance, expressive 2 utterances. The actual functions of the utterances found by context analysis are assertive such as stating, claiming, suggesting notifying, and complaining. Directive such as advising, and commanding. commissive such as threatening, and expressive such as praising and thanking. Thus, the writer concludes that the type of illocutionary act that often appears in Angelique Kidjo’s speech is assertive speech with the function of stating.
